This past weekend went by way too quickly, but I have knocked out my books that I had been reading during my last post.
Reading
I finally finished Demon Copperhead via audiobook on the 1st and holy guacamole, was it a relief to complete this. The only positive part of the entire 21 hour audio book was the very last portion, when Demon gets to go back home and meets up with Angus and they drive off together to see the ocean. For how long and upsetting this book was, the ending had zero pay off for me, even if it was a “happier” ending for Demon.
On the same day, I had finished reading The Bewitching on my Kindle. It was very okay, although I feel like I should have seen the Uncle Arturo being the evil witch trying to sell and get rid of the family farm. I feel like Beatrice’s timeline and story was more connected to Minerva than Alba’s, besides being related, and some story could have been left out. I did have a hunch that Caroline was going to be behind all the wrongdoings, though. For taking place partially in New England, I expected to enjoy this book more but like I said, it was very okay.
Once I was done with my last book, I jumped to She’s a Doll to check off another Goodreads achievement, and I really enjoyed this book. It was a shorter book, which helped me binge read it within two days, but the different characters and their additions to the story helped. I had a love/hate relationship with Lucy, because although I understand her need for revenge on what happened to her, the lack of understanding to what Nicola can and cannot do frustrated me to no end. Nicola’s additional thoughts and feelings to the situation, especially when Kyle also had hurt her in the past and that she had zero support, made me always lean towards Nicola’s plans and choices because of her feelings. On top of she literally always tried to be rational and understanding to Lucy’s suggestions, even if they weren’t rational. I wasn’t expecting the ending to go full Child’s Play, and I feel like it was a tiny bit rushed with Lucy killing Kyle via cement, but it was a fun read! I will be keeping my eyes peeled if they come out with a sprayed edges edition of this book so I can add it to my shelf!
I figured that I would start The Haunting of Hill House immediately to finish the current unlocked achievements because it’s another book that has been on my TBR because I really enjoyed the Netflix show, and it looks like it’s supposed to be a shorter read. I’m trying the immersive reading when I can, but I am not much of a fan of the audiobook’s narrator. I will say, I am only 40% in and I can’t tell if Eleanor is nuts due to the unrelated comments she keeps making or if it is the writing style, because the book is from 1959. I’m hoping it comes together in the second half of the book because I want to like this book.
I have a whole bunch of backlog that I need to get to once I finish The Haunting of Hill House. I still have Coffee Magic for the Modern Witch to finish, which I know I will get back to reading, but I also need to finish Teach Me to Prey and then start The Stitch Witches, two ARCs I got through NetGalley. I also need to start Anathema by Keri lake, because I have the audiobook on hold and I want to complete it before it’s due. Then, of course, I have my book club coming up Wednesday night, so I’ll have an additional book to read, along with the two final locked achievements on Goodreads. Once I get through all of these, I have so many backlogged books on my TBR, I don’t know how to get through them all!
