Last night Matt and I had actually watched Episode 7 upon release, so I am trying to get caught up on all of the episode reviews so I am situated for Episode 8! After following Episode 5, which was the flashback episode, I feel like it is a little hard to compete! I don’t know if this show has had a “weak point” so far, but I will say it will have a hard time topping Episode 5. Let’s get started!
The show jumps in with the two scientists being tasked to completely wipe Nibs’ memory to before the mission to the city due to her thinking she is pregnant, which was the aftermath of the traumatic events that took place back to back (although I know the show is pushing towards the crash being the beginning of her trauma, but I feel like being a sick child, then having your consciousness transferred into an adult robotic body after being taken from your family, no transition time into this adult body as a child, and then being tasked in a scary and dangerous mission…I feel like there is a lot of things probably going on in her mind). The scientists, who I didn’t realized were married, are against this, but Dame agrees to while her husband, Arthur, immediately disagrees. Atom Eins fires Arthur, because now the company only needs the one person, and tells him he needs to leave the island by the end of the day. They go through the whole sequence of erasing her mind…all for Wendy to find her with questions, bringing up all of those events that were erased. I did think this was a little silly because there was no time in between, but it’s a show and they need to keep the plot moving. This also helps move Wendy more away from the Neverland track of mind of “yes” (which we see a lot more of later).
I hated Kavalier scene with Yutani, meeting with a mediator to discuss the terms of the crashed ship and creatures. He walked in cocky with an attitude, disrespectful towards literally all parties, and ends up getting his way after spilling that Yutani had illegal specimens that have not gone through quarantine for the set amount of time, which is why she wants everything back. I know this proves that both parties are bad guys, and I honestly don’t like either one of them because why is anyone capturing alien species, but this whole scene just made me dislike him even more.
The part that I did like from this whole scene was afterwards when Morrow and Kirsh were in the elevator and had words between each other, which I thought was a cool exchange. Morrow, who is still at least partially human competing with Kirsh, who is completely synthetic. I have enjoyed Kirsh this season, and now that I am liking Morrow’s character after getting background I thought this was a nice addition.
I will say, I don’t think the T. Ocellus is a good alien any more. As the sheep, he did startle Isaac into getting locked into the alien flies’ enclosure, which attacked him. His death was also pretty gruesome, which was sad because I did like his character (although going back to the point children shouldn’t be working in a lab). I loved the special effects that they used though during this process!
Speaking of special effects, they did a freaking fantastic job at making it all look amazing! I feel like typically something always looks off, whether it is lighting or textures, something is always ever so slightly off. Everything that they have done looks beautiful!
I was really hoping Slightly was going to get Joe to go with him, although realistically who would listen to someone speaking vaguely the way Slightly was? Since this wasn’t going to happen, of course Arthur being fired sets up Slightly’s task into getting Morrow a specimen easier, because now Arthur is the poor character that is going to be essentially sacrificed for this. I was honestly upset that Slightly managed to lock Arthur in the containment that Isaac’s body was in, but eventually he got the body out and into the vents (without the flies attacking him in the process until last minute).
I thought this was another good episode, with everything progressing well. I can always look past some silly plot moving points when the overall show has been a lot of fun to watch!
